Waterford Punish Exile's Indiscipline
Waterford Punish Exile's Indiscipline
July 12, 2011
Waterford registered their first-ever qualifier win in style as they comfortably defeated 13-man London at Ruislip.
A blistering first-half performance, coupled with the sendings off of Paul Geraghty and Ciaran McCallion either side of half-time, helped the Deise cause.
Playing with the strong wind in the first half, Waterford got off to a dream inside two minutes when Gary Hurney found the net. An attempt from Sean Fleming came back off the post and into the path of Hurney, who tapped in.
Dominant around midfield, Waterford put daylight between the teams with six unanswered points, two coming from the superb Paul Whyte.
Two late efforts from Tony Gaughan gave London hope heading into the break but they were then rocked by the dismissal of Geraghty for a second bookable offence. Waterford had a commanding 1-10 to 0-5 lead at the change of ends.
London started the second half with intent and three early scores suggested an unlikely comeback, but their hopes were quashed when McCallion received a second yellow for a moment of madness.
Three late frees from subs Killian Phair and Sean Kelly put respectability on the scoreline for London, but Waterford were never in danger.
