The Rising will be a stirring, exciting movie about a forgotten hero of the Irish Rebellion. Based and produced in Ireland, this will be the first feature film to portray the life and character of the remarkable character of Seán MacDiarmada, the hero of - and inspiration to - Michael Collins. This compelling movie will depict the universal tale of an underdog fighting a much larger force: fighting for the freedom of his country and his countrymen.

Known to the British as Sean MacDermott, this patriotic farmer's son sought freedom that was directly influenced by the guarantee which Washington procured for America. MacDiarmada's actions ultimately led to the step from the famine Ireland of the 19th century to the free Ireland of the 20th century, and his story concerns the rising of a country, not the destruction of a city.

Disappointed by a current lack of government backing in Ireland, the families of the rebellion leaders have got behind Kevin McCann, the producer of The Rising. It is this movie that will tell a story that is historically accurate, exciting and important. As the centenary of the Easter Rising approaches in 2016 (sparking both public interest and controversy), this movie will serve as an appropriate and well-considered memorial to those who fought and died.

Producer Kevin McCann says “we're delighted to have not just the support of Seán MacDiarmada's family, but also the family of fellow leader James Connolly. Along with some county councils in Ireland and the film board in Belfast, I've also successfully secured some funding from the US. All this has allowed me to do the necessary research and work on the script, but now I need the people to help tell this final piece in the story of Ireland's freedom. The Rising will complete the trilogy of great films on Irish freedom, and will be seen as the prequel to two successful and defining cinematic classics: namely Neil Jordan’s movie on Michael Collins (with Liam Neeson) and Ken Loach’s The Wind That Shakes the Barley (with Cillian Murphy). Key names and acting talent have expressed an interest in working on this project, and Kevin has approached actors such as Colin Morgan, Brendan Gleeson and Fionnuala Flanagan.

Having made the documentary “The Boys of St Columb's” (charting the early years of Nobel Prize laureates Seamus Heaney and John Hume), as well as the multi-award winning 30 minute drama “Volkswagen Joe” (which picked up awards in Chicago, Boston, Colombia and Rome), The Rising will be McCann's first feature film. Production is due to start early 2015 with filming in Ireland and the US a few months later, followed by a global release to cinemas in time for the centenary in 2016.
