London Youth Committee notes
May 23, 2016
Sam Maguire and Liam MacCarthy coming âhomeâ as Cups take Pride of Place again at GAA All Britain Championship Tournament. It will attract almost 2000 youth participants from schools and GAA Clubs all over England, Scotland, and Wales with an invitation cross- community Ulster team, Cúchulainns participating. The Tournament will be graced this year again by the presence of the Liam MacCarthy and Sam Maguire Cups. The presence of the Cups named in their honour in London could not be more appropriate in the year of the 100th Anniversary of 1916. It will also include an extra day of competition. The presence of the two cups resonates deeper than the notoriety of their names. They highlight the enormous contribution of the GAA community in Britain in the development of the organisation. The full contribution Britain made to the GAA is not popularly and fully known. Many would be surprised to know that the contribution of both Sam Maguire and Liam MacCarthy was made almost entirely in Britain with many others at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Century, a period when London won the All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 1901 (see attached from ABC Programme for full article about Liam MacCarthy and Sam Maguire)
The importance of the ABC tournament can be demonstrated by those attending from GAA Headquarters in Croke Park. At this stage it is anticipated that those present will include: Aogán à Fearghail, President of the GAA, Michael Hasson, President of the Council of Ulster and Vice âPresident of GAA, Helen O Roarke, CEO Ladies Games, Pat Daly, Director of Games, and Frank Burke, Head of Coaching and Games. The games will also be attended by Irish Ambassador, Dan Mulhall, and Celine Byrne of the Irish Abroad Unit, Department of Foreign Affairs.
The Games Schedules for this yearâs tournament are as follows:
On Thursday 7th of July at 10.30am for Primary Schools
On Friday 8th of July at 10.30am Secondary Schools at 3.00pm U-8/10 Boys Gaelic Football;
