MATCH REPORTS for U15's/U16's
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1st 2013
On Sunday December the 1st in Tir Chonaill Gaels Club Greenford saw the Wanderers AFL boys back in London for a couple of exhibition matches with the London GAA Development Squads. The games were played using a mix of Aussie Rules and GAA rules with 4 quarters played instead of two halves. The majority of the exhibition matches were played with the Gaelic Football but for the last quarter of these Comprised Rules matches, the Sperrin (the oval shaped Aussie Rules Football!!!) was thrown in. This was a big change for our boys and made for a very interesting spectacle, providing great entertainment for the large crowd in attendance on the day.
London U-15âs vs. Wanderers AFL U-15âs
The first match was played between the younger boys from both squads but London fielded a very young team with 13 of their starting 15 being U-14. This led to our boys being somewhat tentative and a little sedated throughout the opening exchanges. Our young men found the more physical approach of the Aussies to be very different to what they are accustomed and seemed a little taken aback to begin with. London were sloppy and lethargic in position, while the Australians struggled, understandably, with their kicking and only for a very well taken Kieran Rice goal would have been in trouble. It was only after the introduction of the star men at this age group, Conor Spinks and Frazer Lennon, London started to pull away from the opposition and at the end of the 3rd quarter London led by 11 points. There were some outstanding performances around the field which put the young boys in such a commanding position with Kelvin Adepitan outstanding in goal, Patrick Boyle and Ciarán OâDonoghue magnificent in defence, Benjamin and Christopher Kudehinbu dominant in midfield and the dynamic duo of Spinks and Lennon unstoppable up front, going by opponents with consummate ease and linking beautifully to craft score after score, but it was Victo Ozobia, the man of the match, who typified the attitude and application which we are looking for from these young men with a tremendous work rate and appetite for success which was infectious to all of those around him. He put in a great shift for his County on Sunday and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come. For the last quarter, we introduced the Sperrin just for a bit of âFUNâ but the Aussies didnât see it that way and came storming back to score 4 goals in the final quarter and unbelievably win the game by 2 pointsâ¦..a harsh lesson to learn for some of these players but one which we were more than happy for them to learn in a non-competitive environment and on a day when enjoyment was the primary focus.
London: Kelvin Adepitan, Patrick Boyle, Conor Bradshaw, Dara Shortall, Matthew Tierney, Ciarán OâDonoghue, Oisin Bradley, Benjamin Kudehinbu (0-1), Christopher Kudehinbu, Darragh Mahon (0-1), Colm McSheffrey, Conor McDermott, Rotimi Isagba (0-1), Ryan McCready, Kieran Rice (1-1). Subs: Aidan Harte, Francis Higgins, Musa Jamal Nasir, Victor Ozobia, Conor Spinks (2-1), Frazer Lennon (1-3), Kurotimi Yinfaowei and Ruiari OâConnor.
Final Score: London U-15âs 4-8 vs. Wanderers AFL U-15âs 4-10.
London U-16âs vs. Wanderers AFL U-16âs
The second match was a far more one sided affair with more inspired performances from some of the heroes of the successful trip to Mayo for the Dermot Earley Tournament back in September. Whereas in the first game the younger boys were intimidated by their more physical Australian counterparts, the older boys from London met fire with fire and there was some serious hits put in throughout this game. London meant business from the off and starting the game with a massive intensity and purpose that blew the Aussies away and it was Alfie McNulty that set the tone for the whole match with a 1st quarter Hat-Trick of goals. From here on in, London continued to dominate and when the opposition were unable to overpower us, they had no response to the sublime football that we produced at times. With some of the extremely talented younger boys such as Conor Bradshaw, Dara Shortall, Matthew Tierney and Ryan McCready playing their second match of the dayâ¦â¦.we had learned our lessons from the first game and moved ball much faster. The Australians couldnât live with the speed of thought of this team and their Head Coach stated afterwards that even when the Sperrin was introduced the London boys outplayed them. These young footballers truly are a joy to watch and play the game in the right way. They are hard but fair and move the ball quickly and effectively. They can open teams up with their movement and are capable of kicking some fantastic scores. The whole team were magnificent on the day with Ruairi OâConnor sound in goal, Ciarán McNamara and our fearless leader Sean McGoldrick imperious in defence, the midfield combination of Ryan OâConnell and Shane Buckley simply sublime kicking 6 points from play between them and we had quality performances in attack from the Hat-Trick Hero Alfie McNulty, Messieurs Spinks and Lennon (AGAIN!!) but the Star Man was the flamboyant Mickey Maher who turned in a quality performance. He possesses great power, pace and physicality, with even the opposition commenting on the wonderful attributes he has in his armoury. He has no little skill when it comes to the ball either, finishing with a very impressive total of 1-4. Certainly one to watch but there are so many talented individuals coming through the underage set-up in London GAA at the moment. Exciting times ahead!!
London: Ruari OâConnor, Ciarán McNamara, Conor Bradshaw (0-2), Dara Shortall, Matthew Tierney, Seán McGoldrick (1-1), Oisin Bradley, Ryan OâConnell (0-2), Shane Buckley (0-4), Conor Spinks (1-1), Mikey Maher (1-4), Frazer Lennon (0-3), Alfie McNulty (3-0), Ryan McCready, Aidan McGarvey. Subs: Ciarán OâDonoghue, Killian Butler (0-1), Niall Walsh, Ciarán Healy, Matthew Walsh and Liam Gallagher.
Final Score: London U-16âs 6-18 vs. Wanderers AFL U-16âs 2-10.
