Wanderers Australia AFL V London GAA Development Squad
On Saturday, December 9th Greenford hosted a special day of recognition regarding London GAA, competing against Wanderers Australia AFL. The visitors were on the final leg of a three-week journey around Ireland and the UK. The Wanderers played a total of five ‘Compromised Rules’ matches in Ireland, contesting against Lucan Sarsfields (Dublin), Monaleen (Limerick), The Downs (Westmeath), Mullingar Shamrocks (Westmeath) and finally Skerries Community College (Dublin) before making their travels back to Australia, stopping off in London to contest two final matches against the London GAA Development Squad.
With both teams playing a version of ‘Compromised Rules’ from both their codes, this was always expected to be a spectacular event. Spectators were treated to wonderful entertainment with great physicality, skill and speed on display by all the players. Both games were evenly contested, but as the games progressed, the most influential part to the Aussies gameplay being their natural ability to smother the opposition with the ‘wrap’ tackle, and the technical ability to move with and off the ball provided them with an advantage over their counterparts. Favours started to fall the Aussies way near the final quarters of the games. With the GAA ball predominantly facilitating the London teams, the Aussies showed their flare with the Sperrin, displaying a spectacular kicking performance of excellent scores throughout the two age groups with the oval ball.
The presentation of the Aussies match ball along with club tops were given to the players of the London teams, along with a London jersey in return to the Wanderers.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all participants in Wanderers AFL and London GAA the very best of luck for their upcoming seasons. We were privileged to accommodate the Wanderers Australia AFL teams and hope to do so again in the near future.
